Cathode Applications

Titanium-clad copper cathodes are used in electrochemical applications that require a conductive, corrosion-resistant material. These cathodes are designed for environments where pure copper would quickly corrode, but the high conductivity of copper is still needed. Here are some primary applications:

Electroplating

Titanium-clad copper cathodes are widely used in electroplating, where a thin layer of a metal (like gold, silver, or nickel) is deposited onto another material. The titanium cladding protects the copper core from corrosion in the plating bath, extending the cathode’s life while maintaining conductivity.

Electrowinning and Electrorefining:

In metal recovery processes like electrowinning (extraction of metals from ores) and electrorefining (purifying metals), titanium-clad copper cathodes are used for their durability and resistance to chemical attack. These cathodes allow efficient recovery of metals like copper, zinc, and nickel from solutions in industries like mining.

Chlor-Alkali Production:

In the chlor-alkali process, which produces chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide by electrolysis of saltwater, titanium-clad copper cathodes are used because they resist the highly corrosive chlorine gas while maintaining efficient electrical conductivity.

Water Treatment and Wastewater Purification

Titanium-clad copper cathodes are used in electrochemical cells for water and wastewater treatment. They help in removing heavy metals, reducing contaminants, and disinfecting water by providing a stable, corrosion-resistant surface.

Cathodic Protection Systems:

In systems designed to prevent corrosion (like those protecting pipelines and marine structures), titanium-clad copper cathodes help conduct current to the structure needing protection, increasing the durability of the system.
