Wide Application of Titanium Fasteners

Small screws, often used as toys, play a crucial role in various aspects of life and have significantly impacted human industrial development. They are known as “industrial meters” and are manufactured using various metal materials for various applications.

The advantages of titanium alloy fasteners:

1. Small density, high strength and high specific strength:

Titanium alloys are lighter and less dense than steel materials. The widespread usage of titanium alloy fasteners has the potential to drastically lower mechanical quality and energy consumption, which poses a clear financial as well as environmental risk. Since titanium alloy is stronger and has a higher specific strength than aluminum alloy, it is undoubtedly more suited for some harsh conditions, like space and the ocean.

2. Strong corrosion resistance:

Titanium alloy fasteners are widely used in marine engineering and chemical refining due to their resistance to corrosive media like seawater, chlorite, and organic acids. They maintain good mechanical properties even at high temperatures, making them suitable for precision machinery and the aerospace industry, where non-magnetic properties are crucial.

3. Small Thermal Expansion Coefficient and Elastic Modulus

Titanium alloy material has lower thermal expansion coefficient and elastic modulus compared to nickel and steel, resulting in higher thermal fatigue performance. Its unique “color titanium” surface allows for high appearance, making it suitable for various industries, including aerospace, where colorful fasteners highlight unique characteristics.

China has been using titanium alloy fasteners since 1965, with a small number used in second-generation military aircraft in the 1980s. The development of titanium alloy materials and fastener manufacturing technology has led to their widespread use in aerospace, marine engineering, chemical industry, and civil fields. These fasteners are effective in resisting seawater erosion, improving machinery service life, and facilitating maintenance. Despite their high price, advancements in titanium material production are expected to promote their application in the civil field.
